- ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA
-
- Act 3 Scene 12
-
- (Enter Caesar, Agrippa, Thidias, and Dolabella, with others)
- l1l Caesar Let him appear thatÆs come from Antony.
- l2l Know you him?
- Dolabella Caesar, Ætis his schoolmaster;
- l3l An argument that he is plucked, when hither
- l4l He sends so poor a pinion of his wing,
- l5l Which had superfluous kings for messengers
- l6l Not many moons gone by.
- (Enter Ambassador from Antony)
-
- Caesar Approach and speak.
- l7l Ambassador Such as I am, I come from Antony.
- l8l I was of late as petty to his ends
- l9l As is the morn-dew on the myrtle leaf
- l10l To his grand sea.
- Caesar Be Æt so. Declare thine office.
- l11l Ambassador Lord of his fortunes he salutes thee, and
- l12l Requires to live in Egypt; which not granted,
- l13l He lessens his requests, and to thee sues
- l14l To let him breathe between the heavens and earth,
- l15l A private man in Athens. This for him.
- l16l Next, Cleopatra does confess thy greatness,
- l17l Submits her to thy might, and of thee craves
- l18l The circle of the Ptolemies for her heirs,
- l19l Now hazarded to thy grace.
- Caesar For Antony,
- l20l I have no ears to his request. The Queen
- l21l Of audience nor desire shall fail, so she
- l22l From Egypt drive her all-disgracΦd friend,
- l23l Or take his life there. This if she perform
- l24l She shall not sue unheard. So to them both.
- l25l Ambassador Fortune pursue thee!
- Caesar Bring him through the bands.
- (Exit Ambassador, attended)
- l26l (To Thidias) To try thy eloquence now Ætis time. Dispatch.
- l27l From Antony win Cleopatra. Promise,
- l28l And in our name, what she requires. Add more
- l29l As thine invention offers. Women are not
- l30l In their best fortunes strong, but want will perjure
- l31l The neÆer-touched vestal. Try thy cunning, Thidias.
- l32l Make thine own edict for thy pains, which we
- l33l Will answer as a law.
- Thidias Caesar, I go.
- l34l Caesar Observe how Antony becomes his flaw,
- l35l And what thou thinkÆst his very action speaks
- l36l In every power that moves.
- Thidias Caesar, I shall.
- (Exeunt Caesar and his train at one door, and Thidias at
- another)
